EasyMode: Polly Alocasia

Polly Alocasia’s are definitely not for the faint of heart. They are challenging and needy but with enough patience and care it will grow into a beautiful big leafed plant .

Where they are from

Polly Alocasia are from the Rainforest. They live in moist tropical climates and that can make it a challenge to grow in your own home. They also like well draining soil.

Water

Although they are Rainforest plants they do no like to sit in wet soil. They like to dry out between watering. I water mine when the moisture meter is on dry or about every 7-10 days. They are very easy to over-water so when in doubt give it an extra day.

a bit over watered…. whoop

Light

This can be one of the most trying parts. Too much light an it will get burn sports or turn yellow. Not enough and it will not grow. I have found a south window has made this Alocasia the most happy.

Dont over love

Polly Alocasicas love to be root bound. Take your time in repotting. Most home grown plants are grown in a mix of Coconut Coir and soil.

Other important things to note are they very rarely grow in the Winter. Typically, from October through March they will do nothing. They may even drop some leaves. Don’t give up hope! They can lose all their leaves and still grow. Just know that winter is rough for Polly Alocasias. They do recover in the Spring.

These Plants are challenging. All the photos are of my Polly Alocasia, its gone through many growth spurts and sadly, leaf dropping as you can see it does recover and has gotten really large.
